Safe plantings on leech field?

srossoJune 1, 2009

I know trees are not good for leech fields because the roots can grow into the perforated pipes and cause a blockage. i'm wondering what is safe to grow. i would like to grow red poppies or some other perennial. thanks very much.

I believe you can flush down copper sulfate periodically to prevent tree roots from blocking.

Grass is good.
Flowers should be OK, but don't water them too much. It's the roots that are the biggest problem but also you want the leach field to be able is dispate the water so it needs to be resonably dry.

Is this the same thing as a septic field? A friend wanted to grow specific (recommended) native grasses but is very restricted by what her township allows. You might want to check for anything like that.
