Help with Craftsman floor tile

lizbeth-gardenerJune 14, 2009

Wish I would have found this board sooner. We are adding a bath to a 1919 built craftsman and have had a time with choosing floor tile. We purchased 1"hex tumbled white carrera marble. It has 1/16" between tiles. I am having nightmares about upkeep. Was told by a kitchen designer (no vested interest) that I could seal with a product called Porous 511 and it would last a long, long time. We have to return this Monday, June 15 if we are going to return. Is there a better choice? We want to keep with the white look and are thinking subway tiles for the shower and white carrera or a quartz with that look for the old style vanity.

What color grout are you planning for the floor? I hope not white if you are worried about it getting dirty. I'd go with the white tiles and a pale grey grout, then use a grout sealer. That should be good for the future.

There are sources like hextile.com that sell the flat historic hex tiles in white and black, and also American Restoration tile.

FWIW I installed 3 inch cararra hex tiles in my bathroom about 8 months ago with pale grey (Silverado) grout. They were sealed, of course. So far no problems, and I really like them.
