I have read a lot of posts about how (relatively) easy it is to refinish wood floors (DIY) with a U-Sand machine. I went to rent one, and the man at the rental store told me I needed to rent two machines: the U-Sand for the majority of the floor, and a different machine for the edges. Is this true? I had hoped to just use the U-Sand everywhere. Thanks!

The U-sand gets close to the edges but you may still need the edge sander to clean things up. Adding the edge sander is not that big a deal. I re-did a porch floor and tried both the traditional drum sander and the U-Sand. Being a DYI-er as well I found the U-Sand much easier to get a good result.

A hand orbital sander will work fine. You'll only need it in the corners. The edges will be fine if you use shoe moulding. Buy extra sand paper!
