Period colors

kahvApril 16, 2011

We have a 1910 "arts and crafts" home soon to be in the National Historical Register. We would like to paint it in period colors. The front of the house has an enclosed sunporch with lots of windows. I want three colors and cannot decide. I was thinking of a tan or green with some sort of rust trim, but cannot think of three together. We have a lovely front door with leaded glass and that needs to stand out......Can anyone help?

Take a look at the Sherwin Williams Arts and Crafts Palette 1 and 2. I've enclosed their link, but on my monitor, the colors aren't true to real life...get samples from their store.

I'd also suggest looking at

http://www.americanbungalow.com/magazine/family-album/

There are lots of pictures in each family album.

You could check out the book "Bungalow Colors - Exterior" by Robert Schweitzer (http://www.amazon.com/Bungalow-Colors-Exteriors-Robert-Schweitzer/dp/1586851306) or his web site at http://www.historichousecolors.com/where you can see some color examples.

the Schweitzer book is good cause it shows real live houses, not just theory, but also look for anything by Roger Moss - he writes mostly about late Victorian color, but there are alot of the same pallets for that and A&C. HE, in Fact helped create the Sherwin Williams historic color pallets.

Do you have a local historic commission or anything like that? When I was painting an old house near Detroit, I found this to be useful, but I don't think Motown had much use for Arts and Crafts so you might need to find something similar for your area. :)
