Matching vinyl siding to 1929 wood siding?

Sparks72March 15, 2013

We are adding a garage to the back of our 1929 craftsman. The house is sided with the original cedar and it's just too expensive to use on the new garage. Need to find a siding to match the wood. Any ideas?

We'll also be painting the house but will have to match whatever siding color we pick and are also limited by the green roof.

Any suggestions?

Here's a close up of the siding.

Can't get much detail since the pic is out of focus...but why not use a non-cedar wood siding? Or the Hardi-Plank stuff? I've not priced them but siding comes in other woods than cedar which are cheaper.

By the way, the house is great--try to match all the details you can such as trim and coursing of the siding...and window sizes are very important...if you can't get ones close to the original sizes, go without.

It is drop siding or dutchlap by the looks of it. You can get it in knotty pine or spruce for a fraction of the cost of cedar.

Any idea what another type of wood would cost compared to a good vinyl? What about longevity? Most of the cedar on the house is original, lasts a LONG time.

Material may be less expensive depending on where you live. Labor would cost more I am sure. How much I could not tell you.

Since this looks like a one storey garage project, you would save on labor by putting up the wood siding yourself...two people, a saw and a few tools can do it.

Why limit your paint choices to what will match the 'good' vinyl siding when you can use non-cedar wood and paint whatever color pleases you? In my opinion, there is no 'good' vinyl or aluminum siding with its highly visible overlap joints and give-away j-channel fastenings. By the way, the siding will also fade and look like crap, and you've wasted your money when you have to repaint the house a paler shade to match it AGAIN.

That's a beautiful house, it would be a shame to spoil it with a vinyl addition. Hope you find a way. It is a pretty easy DIY project if it's one story ad you can save a ton on both siding and painting. If you can, prime and paint the clapboards on all sides before you put them up and include a rainscreen underneath for a very long-lasting paint job.

Here are the drawings but will have carriage doors with windows since there are no other windows in the garage.

Match the exposure and it should look very close from a distance.

Even closer under a coat of paint.

Going to bite the bullet and match the cedar.
