cleaning and protecting copper

lisa98112June 5, 2006

We have the original grates for our heat vents and I want to clean all of the years of paint and grime off of them and use the original metal finish. I used some paint stripper and mineral spirits on one and realized it is copper not iron like we originally thought.

Is there a better way to clean it? How can I protect the finish so it won't rust or get dirty quickly?

I can't tell you an easy way to clean it.
I'm sure there are mixtures you can soak it in.
Check the link below.

To protect it after it is clean,
set it out in the hot sun for a few hours and let it get hot.
Then spray it with poly-urethane. This bakes it on.
After it is dry, spray wax it.
