copper question

brooks1February 22, 2011

I've got a couple questions regarding a large (20''W by 38'' L by 10'' D) copper pan that we use as a sap evaporator.

It leaks slightly in a couple spots along the joints. How would I go about repairing these?

Also, we've been toying around with the idea of modifying this into a bit more functional evaporator by inserting two dividers lengthwise. Do these need to be copper or could they be stainless or some other material? How would the joints to the main pan be best achieved? Thanks in advance for any help!

How hat does the pan get?

Lead free plumbing solder is one possibility.

Joining dissimilar metals can be a real problem.

A copper divider might be your best option.
It would also eliminate possible comparability issues between the two metals.
