Size of outdoor lighting by front door

kate38December 13, 2011

Our front door is 82" tall on a covered porch. The rule of thumb we've read is that the height of the sconces should be 1/4 the size of the door. We're finding lights we like that are anywhere in the 18" to 24" range, rather than 20.5. If we chose an 18" high light, would it look too small? Many of the lights we are looking at are not returnable, so we can't try them out for size. Please share your wisdom/experience. Thanks.

Do you have a single or a double front door? Side-light windows? Bigger or bold trim around the door? Will they need to be placed quite close to the door or can they be set a little farther away?

I don't think so, if it is properly placed. Will you be using existing wiring, or can you mount them as high or low or as far apart as you would need to?
