Have 'Jetsons' recessed lights. How to change to smaller?

westsider40December 23, 2009

Good thing is we have recessed lights all over the house. But, they were installed in the 80's and they are huge. They take big bulbs and have a wide rim on the casing.

What is involved in making them smaller? Do the ceiling holes have to be replastered or is it merely a matter of installing smaller rims and/or housing?

Thanks.

It is usually necessary to cut out a square of ceiling larger than the fixture, remove the fixture and housing, install a new fixture and then patch the hole.

Once, on some 6" fixtures I was able to remove the interior trim and replace it with a "cross blade" trim made for the original housing. Using frosted PAR 30 lamps also helped.
