Wattage for island lights?

hedgehoggyNovember 9, 2012

For our new build we are planning 5 recessed lights for the kitchen and mini hanging pendants over the island. The mini hanging pendants that match my dining room fixture are 60w lights (I would have three of these) and I had a lighting designer tell me that a 100w light would be better. Anyone have a similar lighting layout (kitchen is L shaped with almost 8' island) and use 60w over island. If so, if this enough light?

Using watts as a measure of light output is difficult given that there are differing efficiencies in light production.

A bare 60W incandescent produces between 800 - 900+ lumens, while a 100W will provide ~ 1500 - 1700 lumens.

Almost all bulbs will have some decorative and/or protective shade/ enclosure which will detract from the actual output.

A better way is to figure out the amount of light required by calculating as described in the following link.
