Recessed cans for new wiring/old ceiling

djMaxSeptember 18, 2011

Is there a clear winner for LED lighting where new wires will be run, but I don't want to open up the ceiling? i.e. a retrofit from a structural perspective but not an electrical one? I really like what switchlightbulbs is supposedly coming out with, but that's using a standard can, which seems like mostly a waste in my case since I end up with big transformers in the bulb. I have 10'9" ceilings, so beam spread shouldn't be too hard to get right (?) but color temperature is key.

Thanks

If not opening up the ceiling is a must, you need retrofit cans. This assumes that there is already electrical wiring in the ceiling that an electrician can tap onto.

The diameter of the can will influence the led module that can be used.

For instance, Cree CR6 / LR 6 lamps need 6" housings.

The Cree lamps are imo the best available today. The next would be the Sylvania RT6.
