Placement of recessed lights in kitchen

nap101August 24, 2012

I have an 8.5 x 11 galley kitchen. I will have LED UC Lights. I was planning on 3 cans centered in a row along the ceiling. I will also have a pendant over the sink.

Just met with an electrical contractor who recommended having 2 rows with the lights close to the cabinets because you don't want the light behind you when you are working.

I thought that was what UCLs are for. Aren't the overheads more for ambient room light?

Traditional recessed lighting (deep recess, using BR reflector lamps) tends to have a spotlight effect.

The advice is typical given the above, but some times it is just impractical due to the location of stuff above the ceiling board and/ or other considerations. You should also calculate the number of lights needed.
