Help picking out a chandelier for an enclosed staircase

LLongJuly 10, 2014

Hi, I am trying to figure out the right size for a chandelier for my enclosed staircase. It has a very high ceiling, but the stairs are only 44" across. Right now there is no lighting in the space, and it is extremely dark. I'm trying to figure out if I should go 5 lights, 1 tier or 3 lights, 1 tier. Most 5 lights are around 26". Is that too big? I'm afraid 3 lights will look too little. Any suggestions? Also, the lights should be pointed upward, correct?

IMO, 3 would be adequate, with 5 you could go with lower wattage bulbs and not have it too bright.
You can find many 5 bulb fixtures less than 26", depending on the style that you want. Style would also determine where the bulbs are pointed. With a clear glass fixture and clear bulbs, it tends not to matter.
BTW, have you considered how you will replace the bulbs in the stairwell?

Randy427 - Thanks for the info. Yeah, changing the bulbs will always be tricky. I know they have those extenders that you can use, but they only work if the bulb faces down. Any other suggestions or insight?
