Lighting porch columns?

flgargoyleJuly 12, 2013

The house we're building is a small Craftsman bungalow, with a wide shed roof porch on the front. There will be 4 typical fat tapered Craftsman columns holding up the porch roof. I'd like to wash those columns with light to highlight the design at night. We're deep in the woods, so outdoor lighting is essential.

My current plan is to put 4" damp location cans in the overhang soffit and use 4" eyeball LED lamps so I can aim them. The overhang is about 24", so the light will be about 18" out from the columns. Will this make a nice effect? My only other option would be to use small floodlights on the ground, or even a combination of the two. My objection to the ground lights would be that it wouldn't work if I plant anything there. I'm working on my rough electrical, so I need to plan for the cans if I go with them. Thoughts?
