Critique my kitchen lighting design

aatarkJune 16, 2011

Hi all,

I'm a bit puzzled about my kitchen lighting design and I welcome any comments/critiques that you may have.

A few facts that you might not be able to gather from the picture. Ceilings are roughly 9'6" (they may be 9'5" if I add some extra sounds insulation).

The current thought is 4000K+, 38 degree MR16s recessed lights everywhere, except a chandelier (like this) above the kitchen island.

Kitchen cabinets will be painted white Brookhaven (Arctic white so there is a slight blue tint), dark, hickory floors and black granite.

I appreciate any comments/questions/thoughts. My real concerns is if I'm going to have enough lighting over my sink and island (the hood will have lights and there are under-cabinet lights too).

You could put a light over the sink.

All MR16 halogen?

I would try to achieve ~ 35 lumens per sq ft in the kitchen for the general lighting - excluding the under cabinet lighting.

MR16 halogens are normally about 2900K. If they're 4100K they must be fluorescent or LED retrofits, or have a blue-tinted lens over them.
