Need advice on porch lighting

gigibozoJune 24, 2012

We are in the process of replacing the front porch of our home, which is 100 years old. We are trying to decide on lighting. The porch is 28 feet wide and 8 feet deep. I want to put a center hanging fixture in and am wondering if that is enough or if I need to add two recessed lights, one in the right section, one in the left. I thought about a wall light next to the door, but it would have to go on the left and then it would be too close to the center light.

If I only do a center light, just wondering if that would light up the entry stair enough.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Porch lights are usually focused on the doorway, since one of their primary purposes is to allow you to see who is at the door after dark. If you do a hanging fixture, it should probably be centered on the door -- just make sure you can open the door without bashing it.

Another traditional look is a wall light on either side of the door.

Either way, especially if you are going to use the porch as an evening sitting area, you probably also want the recessed lighting -- not very traditional, but very useful.
