in cabinet lighting with solid shelves?

eastcoastmomMay 31, 2009

We are in the midst of a kitchen remodel and have several upper glass fronted cabinets. I was clear in my specifications to the kitchen designer that I wanted to do in-cabinet lighting on all of them. The contractor's electrician installed a puck light on the top of each cabinet - of course this lights up only the top shelf and is not right for a cabinet that's going to have solid shelves.

Now the contractor wants me to put in glass shelves, which I didn't want in the first place since I want to display solid objects in addition to glass. Now he is telling me that doing linear xenon lighting will cast shadows and that they are visible. Is that true? The cabinets are custom and if there is anything they didn't do to make this possible (which is what I'm afraid is the case) I'd like to ask for it to be done now.

I know plenty of people have these! How are in cabinet lights usually installed?

Cabinets with face frames may be able to conceal a fixture like Juno Trac 12 vertically mounted if the shelves are reduced in depth to clear it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Juno track 12

You can also notch your shelves, and put your linear lighting behind the posts as dim4fun suggested.
By the way, tell your electrician that, when you're sitting down in your kitchen all you will see is the glare from the puck, and there will be huge shadows on the lower glass shelves cause by objects above them.
The puck light/glass shelf approach is a poor way of lighting
