More light output, g9 halogen bulbs

jeff_4April 5, 2013

We recently purchased a beautiful pendant chandelier (with Erlenmeyer glass cones) from Hubbardton Forge. While we are happy with the lamp, its light output is quite low. It comes with 40 watt g9 halogen bulbs.

While I realize that safety issues require limits on bulb wattage in such enclosed fixtures, I am wondering if I could replace the current bulbs with 50 watt g9 halogen bulbs to increase the light output?

The pendants hang a considerable distance form the ceiling, so I do not see issues with respect to heating immediate surroundings. Of course, the lamp itself will be hotter. Are there still safety issues? Will the fixture itself be damaged?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

If the manufacturer limits you to 40 watts, you're limited to 40 watts. Increasing the watts, as you mention, increases the heat and the risk of damage to the fixture or fire. Nobody can quantify that risk for you.

The temperature rating of the wires feeding the sockets is the usual limit.

Short of rewiring with higher temperature wire you are likely stuck with 40 watts.

You need to increase the heat but it would be dangerous. Why not take it to the manufacture to change one?
