Too late too add under cabinet lighting? Help!

CKGMMarch 18, 2012

So there was a major miscommunication with our GC and the wiring for the under cabinet lighting was never installed. He claims I said I didn't want it? Hmmmm... Not in writing so he wins. So is too late to add? Cabinets are hung and granite countertop due to go in this week. Thanks for any advice you can give.

The main option available now is to use 120V AC lighting and fish wire. There are videos on the internet on retrofitting direct wire UCL.

Thanks for the quick response. Is this expensive and difficult to do?

It is not difficult. Electricians do it all the time.

Thanks- my GC is saying that since the cabinets are installed adding under cab lighting will now be very difficult and costly. Knowing nothing about this topic makes it hard to have a discussion about it:(

Besides fishing wire, there are a number of other things to consider such as
1. Location of the switch(es) - new switch boxes?
2. Physical structure of the cabinet bottoms - frameless european style without intervening styles or not.
3. Type of lights - Kichler vs eW Profile vs ? T4/ T5 fluorescent

I've included a link with a number of details

Here is a link that might be useful: UCL continuation
