Front loader washer in closet???

starsongSeptember 21, 2010

We're renovating and the only place to put our front loading washer and dryer is in a 3 ft deep closet (formerly they were in a very small laundry room). The problem is with a front loader washer, we leave the door open all the time otherwise the drum grows mold and smells like mold (this also recommended by the manufacturer).

However in a 3 ft closet, we won't be able to leave the door open...unless we leave the closet doors open which would be unsightly in our hallway not to mention in our way!

Don't know if there's a solution but thought I'd post this to see if anyone had any creative ideas...

You could leave the door open for just a certain amount of time - say, until the dryer is done. This will allow some moisture to evaporate.

When done washing, you could also remove the detergent drawer and place it on top of the washer (maybe on a small towel, if you like). That way, air can circulate through the washer. It's best to not close the washer's door fully, though. Leave it open just a bit if you can - so that you can still close the closet.

whirlpool trainee - Excellent advice! Thank you. I think we have a few inches to play with in our floorplan so we might extend the closet depth a few inches to just over 3 ft so the door will stay open an inch or so with closet doors closed, but still will be tight...
Thx again!
