Do fixtures need to match in small bath?

wawCooksJanuary 12, 2013

After great debate and many sleepless hours pouring over light fixtures online (no showrooms near us have big enough selections of what we like), we have decided on Sonnenman's votivo 3 light bath bar (only comes in polished chrome) for over the medicine cabinet:

For on either side of the makeup mirror area (which is only 5 feet away since this is a small bath with a raked ceiling) we like the Troll One "Two light Wall Bracket"

The votivo doesn't come in a finish other than polished chrome and the Troll doesn't come in a finish other than satin nickel. The rest of the bath fixtures are chrome. Isn't the Troll One going to look like a sore thumb? We can pick another fixture for the makeup area that comes in chrome like: We don't like it as well (more metal etc) but if the matching is going to be an issue, prefer that route!

We don't even know if the colors of the shades are going to look similar if I cannot see in the can we tell that? Does "opal white" mean anything when different companies use it to describe the color of their shades? Is all "opal white" the same color?

Many people don't care about things like matching but I think we do and perhaps it will bug me...I tried to find pics on Houzz of small spaces where the lighting wasn't identical and found a few examples. But without actually seeing the lights in person it is hard to know if I would get focused on it. I know after a day I won't think about it but what about when we sell (which is hopefully not for 25 years but ...never know and always plan for sooner than I think to be safe). The rest of the bath has been designed to have very clean and simple details. For example the floor of the room and the walls of the shower are the same big tile (dark). Shower 12x24 and floor 24x24 with tiny grout lines the same color as the tile so it can look like a solid surface as much as possible. Glass shower enclosure. Vanity has a white quartz surface that goes from sink across makeup area (I would send pics or layout if I could in a reasonable timeframe but hard to do). Everythiing is clean and simple and I worry that adding different light fixtures will be odd.

Thoughts welcome please.

I personally get a little weird about matching finishes and what you've described would probably bother me but it would not in any way affect my decision on whether to buy a house. So if your main concern is potential resale, don't give it another thought. With all the great stuff you have going on in that bathroom, they'll never notice the lights.

Just from what you've described, I'd rather have all chrome fixtures, but if it won't bother you then go for it.

I see examples of mixing finishes all the time that work very well. I think certain finishes lend themselves better to mixing. I think your lighting will work together but if you are already contemplating it being an issue, don't do it because you will focus on it. I personally think certain people are more prone to the mentality that everything has to match and others are not. Stick with your gut and you will be happy! :)
