how to close off a heat vent in a closet floor?

beth_in_bendNovember 24, 2007

We have a closet (3'x5') where we pen up our dogs when we are not home. There is a heat vent in the floor, right in front of the doggie door. We are replacing our vinyl flooring in the closet and want to cover up the heat vent completely. Is there a way to do this easily? We've been putting a magnetic vent cover over the grill, but we want to eliminate this if possible. The closet really does not need heat or ac. Any advice is appreciated.

Can you see under the closet floor from a basement? If so you should be able to see the ducting that supplies that vent. Follow it back to the main trunk line and you might find a damper. Close it and/or disconnect this run from the main trunk line by purchasing a cap or screw a piece of sheet metal over the hole.

If you can't access underneath, take the vent register off and with a mirror or flashlight look inside and see if you see a damper. Sometimes they are near the register. Maybe you can close it from there. Some air will pass so you might want to disconnect the run as I described.
