Living Room, family room, sitting room, sun room eye candy!

oceannaJanuary 28, 2008

Here are some rooms that could be living rooms, sitting rooms, family rooms, sun rooms, etc. It's hard to tell so I didn't try. As before, if any of these are yours, please claim them. I spent a long time on this thread last night getting close to 80 or so pictures ready to post and then *poof!* the entire thing vanished. That never happened to me on this forum before. I've always been able to recover.

Rilie and Val - thanks! - and you're so welcome.

Isn't this fun? It's like having a huge stack of magazines with the ads and the blab omitted, and no DH nagging us to throw them out. I tried to pick out a lot of pics that were more than "that's nice" rooms, that were "wow!" rooms. Now I'm trying to figure out what it is in each pic that makes them go over that line, and how to translate that into my own home.

Thanks, Oceanna! It is fun looking at all the beautiful rooms sans advertisements. I am sure I'll be back to look at them again. I love the art above the sofa in No. 123, btw, and Greg Jordan's designs in No.'s 78-81. So many beautiful designs in one place. How neat!

Rosewind,

I agree with you about that piece of art; it reminds me of the painted tole trays. I also love the "chainlink" fabric and wallpaper used in Jordan's room. I love diamond shapes.

Claudesw,

Wow, your sunroom is gorgeous! You're in good company with all those fancy designers, and you deserve to be. Thanks for the link.

Wooderlander,

You're welcome. Amy's room?

Brutuses,

Yes, I heard your plea and that's what prompted me to get on this. Now I just need to finish the job and post the rest. I have a whole 'nother section to post. So glad you're enjoying! I hope you find some inspiration for your beautiful new home.

Well, none of these are mine but I sure liked looking at them. Pictures #44 & #45 are "my clock" and the rooms 44, 45 and 46 look like my neighbors house (LOL, my clock and my neighbors house).

Thanks a million, Oceanna.

No, Oceanna, I live in a pretty modest neighborhood, but my neighbor has good taste and has expanded her 2800 sq ft house to be larger, but it had good bones to begin with. Mine is still the original size. :) I loved that clock when I first laid eyes on it and had to work so hard to get the seller to let me pay him by the month because my DH did not want me to get it, so I had to kind of "put it on layaway" with the owner. :)

Oceanna, how difficult would it be to do a "faux" window like the transom in photo number 25? Is that something someone totally untalented, as myself could accomplish? I'd love to be able to do something like that with my transoms since they are going to be just plain glass.

What do I buy to do this?

Brutuses, that window would be absurdly easy to do in Gallery Glass. However, the one in the picture has beveled glass and I don't know of any way to replicate that. Yours would have the black lines and the clear, but the clear would be textured, depending on how you do it.

To do that window, I'd cut out a piece of paper the exact size/shape of your window. Then I'd hand draw your pattern on there. You can do this simple pattern with a ruler. If you prefer, make your pattern on the computer, blow it up and tape pieces together to make your pattern... or email it to Staples or Kinkos and ask them to print it for you. Or, find a pattern you like better at Michaels and buy it.

Next, tape that pattern to the window and transfer the pattern to the window with transfer paper, you know, the grey stuff kind of like old fashioned typing paper carbons. Just trace your lines with a pen, or stylus, or pencil, pushing hard.

Once your design is on your window glass, lay Redi Lead strips (Michaels) on top of your design. The strips may not overlap. I use an exacto knife with a #16 blade in it to cut the tape. Do not stretch the tape as you lay it. Buy a bottle of black liquid leading from Michaels and put a wee dot of paint at each place your lines intersect. This acts/looks like a solder point. It makes your design stronger and it looks more authentic if you do that.

Now fill in the background with Crystal Clear. You can do that by making tiny circles with your bottle tip. It's a lot like Elmer's Glue -- even smells like it. You can leave it that way with the little circles (it's a gorgeous look when dry), or you can comb it with a toothpick to have straight texture on whatever angle you want. Either way will let the light in but will kind of blur the vision through the window. If you wanted the window to remain crystal clear and totally transparent you would skip this step and quit with just the black tape up there, but your work will be stronger with this step.

So that's it. Transfer the pattern to the window. Lay your lines. Dot on your solder points. Fill in with clear or with the color(s) of your choice.

Go to Michaels and buy:
- Redi Lead strips in whichever of the two widths you like
- 1 bottle Liquid Leading
- 1 bottle Crystal Clear

This would be quite inexpensive and the two bottles would be large and enough to do more windows like that.

For your transom, I would just stand on a step stool and do it in place. It's such a simple design and it won't take long. If you wanted to do something more complex with color, or if you just don't want to work from a stepstool, I'd consider having Lowe's cut a piece of Plexiglas to fit in the opening precisely, so that you can work it in comfort at your dining room table. Then put it in place when you're done. You could get your DH to secure it up there with something like quarter round moulding. He'd know what to do.

I'm really excited about you doing this! I hope if you do it you'll post to the regular Discussions side all about it and show us pictures. I'll be wildly cheering you on!

oceanna, thanks so much for these instructions. I would really like to try this if I can find the time to relax and concentrate. It's quite simple from what you tell me. I've never had a steady enough hand to do anything, not even with a pattern. However, since this glass will be 8 feet up in the air, it won't be too noticeable if I make an error or two. Barry hasn't done the transoms yet for the interior doors so I could absolutely do them while seated at a table. You'll be the first to know if I give this a shot. I may just practice on some scrap picture frame glass that I have just to see if I can do it. First I have to find a pattern. If I could pull this off it would be such a nice addition to the plain transoms. Thanks again.

Oceana, These are wonderful. Thank you...
I picked up a few ideas...something I really don't need to do :) sigh! The sofa in #35 that looks like an Italian drop arm sofa, blows my mind. How unique. Looks like they pieced all those great fabrics together to achieve that awesome look...everything sure has my wheels turning! I love all the rooms with a lot of tans and browns and animal print accents. Awesome...
