air conditioning secondary pan

cherylwpSeptember 10, 2011

The secondary pan is welded to the unit above it, at an angle so that the condensation will run out of the pipe attached to the side. The pipe is attached about 3/4 of an inch above the bottom of the pan and thus, water collects below the pipe. The water collects in that corner, since the pan slants to that corner. It cover an area of about 8 inches away from the corner and is beginning to rust that area. This is only a small area (but obviously a problem), as the whole pan is about 4 ft. x 2 1/2 feet. Any ideas for a remedy without replacing the whole pan? The AC people want $600. to replace the pan. The rusted area isn't too bad yet. Not nearly rusted through.

What is the floor in the area?

How much damage will a leak cause?

Get the lines cleaned for the primary pan.

It should be a pretty rare thing for any water to get to the backup pan.

If the rust is tight you can paint a rust conversion primer on the area (do not remove tight rust first) and they just s some spray paint (use Krylon or Rust-Oleum).

Thank you for the answer. I was wondering if it would be worth it to have a second pipe attached in the correct postiion. (the bottom of the pan). The unit is in the attic (space between roof and ceiling), so leaking is not an option. The water is from condensation, as it is a bit humid right now.

"The water is from condensation, as it is a bit humid right now."

Why is the main pan not catching all the condensation?

Good question. Do you have an answer? Can the water in the secondary pan be coming from any thing besides condensation? All the pipes seem to be draining properly.
