Advice on New Heat Pump

Zgreat1September 21, 2011

We live in North Texas. A month ago, when our heat pump was leaking, we spent $500 to have the leak "chemically" sealed and to "top up" the freon. Last weekend, the a/c went out again and were told that the leak could be bigger and would require a manual trace to locate. The approximate cost would be $900 to fix (if in fact the leak could be located) and to "top up". The proposed option was to replace the system.

We were quoted 3 levels (good, better & best) of 5-ton BRYANT systems: 13 SEER, 10.8 EER/ 7.7 HSPF $7,500; 15 SEER, 12.5 EER/8.7HSPF and 16 SEER, 12.6 EER/9.5 HSPF. "Best" is a dual stage heat pump. Each level comes with a tin-plated air handler, a heat kit and a digital controller.

Are Bryant heat pump systems any good? And the prices reasonable? If not, any recommendations? Brands/models and contractors/dealers?

Note: Our house is all electric with no natural gas line.

Great

Depending on mdl, Bryant makes very good equipment.

for a new HP system
You should replace everything both inside air handler and outside condenser.

these are the minimum specs you should be looking for.
both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system.

15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF
best matching VS air handler
full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size
R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron)
scroll compressor preferred
electronic demand defrost preferred
thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature
staged backup heat strips
new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset
10 yr warranty on parts and compressor

you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc.

any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed.

My personal recommendation is Trane/AmStd, Rudd/Rheem, and Carrier/Bryant.

Depending on your location and winter climate, I would not purchase a new system that did not have electronic demand defrost.

Thanks, tigerdunes!

I forgot to type in the prices of the better and best systems. They are $10,400 and $12,500. Each price level includes a matching tin-plated air handler, ECM motor for the good and better systems and variable speed motor for the best. Each level also includes a 20KW heat kit and digital programmable thermostat AND all plenums, pad, pan, disconnect, whip, flush, purge, materials, and labor 3/8 copper line, and line set cover.

Resizing and "rerouting" some of the existing duct work to distribute flow more evenly is an extra $500.

So, are these prices reasonable? Thanks.

Great
It would be unfair of me to comment on prices without knowing complete mdl numbers of inside air handler and outside condenser plus all aux equipment including thermostat mdl for each quote.

You have just rec't quote from one dealer?

I think the good equipment is the way to go (middle quote). I think the quote is expensive though by 2 grand for sure.

Great

You need several more quotes.

I agree that the prices you have been quoted are way over the top based on info you have provided.

If you have cold winters, then I do want electronic demand defrost to
eliminate and reduce nuisance, unnecessary and expensive defrost calls.

Go back and look at my recommended list.

Sorry for the belated response. Got caught up with other chores. Anyway, thank you both for your suggestions and advice. I will re-post when I get a couple more quotes from different vendors/brands and models.
