replacing A/C

odosAugust 3, 2011

I placed a post on here as a new question on a running forum but have not had a response. Basic question is: A/C compressor in a Bryant 3.5 ton is shot. New unit will also require a compatible air handler. Unit will need to serve 9 outlets in a two story 2000 + sq.ft. dwelling. Attached family room has a Fujitsu split unit. Top floor( 3rd floor converted attic) has another Fujitsu split: heating and cooling in these two rooms is ideal. These are not figured into the 2000+ sq.ft. Old air handler is vintage 1981 Lennox and so must be replaced. Some duct work at air handler needs some movement. Air Handler is to be slipped into an eaves space on top floor.

One estimate from NATE certified co with top ranking on Angie's list and DC Consumer Checkbook ratings proposes a Bryant 3 ton, 2 stage, 180BNA036 18 SEER with FE4ANF002 Air Handler at $8,600 - 1000 Bryant rebate for $7,600 total

Awaiting other estimate ( not NATE certified )that would recommend a Trane, but details not yet received.

What is difference between Trane and Bryant? Is there a better choice in roughly this price range?

Other comments also appreciated,

Thanks, Charles

Your location?

You are going down in size from a 3 1/2 ton to a three ton system? This is straight AC system or HP system you are replacing? If straight AC system, how do you heat?

Heating is gas fired hot water radiator. More than sufficient for the house. 3 ton is because the Bryant recommneded does not come in 1/2 ton sizes. With # of outlets, the 3 ton, I was told, is adequate. System is traight AC but as noted, two large areas ( converted attic and new family room addition have Fujitsu split units with satisfactory performance.

I heard this morning that Maryland has extended some energy rebates. You might want to check that out.
