Where is the expansion valve?

busboyAugust 26, 2012

I understand that the expansion valve is where the warm refrigerant from the outdoor unit basically vaporizes, changes state from liquid to gas, and as a result cools tremendously. Is this a seperate device in the air handler unit or is it built into the evaporator coil (unit)? Inquiring mind want to know.

It is usually right at the evaporator coil, and if it is a TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve) may even have a separate sensor bulb attached to the evaporator outlet to control the metering of liquid into the evaporator.

Older systems just used a fixed orifice right at the input to the evaporator coil.
