Squirrel Cage Blower Attic Ventilation?

wilber100August 26, 2011

Before I get too far along on my idea, I'd like to get some thoughts on it.

I'm going to install an attic ventilation fan and as I began the search for the one to get, I found that most of them may be very loud, most look fairly cheap, etc.

My friend is a HVAC guy and I can get the squirrel cage blowers that come out of AC air handlers. I'm pretty dang handy, and I think I can make a good install on a gable end of the house with a thermostat. I just wonder if it's the thing to do since I have never heard of it. They run nice and quiet and are typically well built.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this if you have any.

First put your inventive mind to work considering whether adding an attic ventilation fan is a good idea if you have not doe that already. In most homes it is not a good addition. If you are in a hot, dry climate, insulation, passive ventilation and a radiant shield are good things. In a hot, humid climate, sealing the attic and insulating the roof deck can serve you well.

just a blower from an old unit is not a good idea because they are meant to be enclosed in a plenum. just buy a ventilation fan at home depot and do it right.
