A/C not cooling

hairmetal4everJuly 8, 2012

It is currently 88F in our main floor, and 93 upstairs in our condo. Thermostat is at 73. The AC kicks on, sometimes it does come out cold for a couple minutes at most. It sounds like the compressor is shutting off after just a few minutes and the air coming out of the vents is the same as the ambient temperature after that point. Up until yesterday, it would get hot in the house during the day, but would eventually start cooling in the evening, getting almost cold by sunrise, but tonight, as I sit here at 10:23 PM, it is still not doing a thing. Since it does SOMETIMES get cool, I don't think it is a lack of R12 or freon or whatever it uses.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a low charge.

Have a service company come and put some gauges on the condenser.

You need a seasoned pro to check out system. You should be able to tell if compressor is kicking on just by listening.

If not it could be a severe refrigerant leak.

Those are the areas that tech should eliminate as possibilities.

Sorry for your trouble and obvious discomfort.

BTW, has system given trouble before and when was last time system was given a routine PM check by a dealer?
