Cost of feta...

That's quite a jump! Try Costco or Trader Joe's for the best prices in cheese.

My grocery log has Atheno's Traditional feta at $8.58 for 8 ounces at my last purchase (February '10).

I pick up feta from a Mediterranean market when I'm in Victoria. I like the Macedonian Sheeps Feta and it sells for $1.99 to $2.29 per 100gs. So between $9.00 and $10.00 a pound. It is so much better than the feta that comes in tubs sold in grocery stores.

I just paid $3.18 for a 5oz. tub last Saturday.
Pretty comparable to Ann_T. We're both west coast.

Wow! I guess I am lucky that Chicago has a large Greek/Middle Eastern community. I can go to the market and take my pick of 6 to 9 differant feta's with prices ranging from $8 to $2 per pound. The $2 ones are domestic and pretty darned good.

Sounds like the choices I have at the little Mediterranean market I go to Peppi. They have at least a half dozen different feta cheeses to choose from. You just tell them the size you want and they cut off the piece and package it for you. None are as cheap as $2.00 a pound though. I think the domestic is about $6.50 to $7.00 a pound.

The tubs of feta sold in the grocery store vary. I bought a tub the other day and paid $6.99 for 400g (approximately 14 ounces). It was good in a pinch, but not in the same league as the imported Sheeps feta I buy in Victoria.

The last feta I bought was $2.95# at my favorite cheese factory. That was a couple of weeks ago. Haven't used any of it yet.

I am just looking at my Superstore flyer right now. They have Apetina Feta cheese, 400 g tub, for $6.97. Not sure if it's a sale price or regular. I don't normally buy Feta cheese. The only soft cheese I use is cottage cheese. I have some cheese cultures that I can use to make Feta but I haven't tried it. Is Feta better than cottage cheese i.e. healthier or tastier? Just curious.

I use feta in a couple of different ways - in salads, in greek goodies like spanakopita and "pie" with phyllo, apricots, chicken.

I pay 4oz 113g anywhere $2 to $6 so it can run as much as $24USD per pound. Al, it's much tangier and crumblier than cottage cheese something you mention as star/needed ingredient whereas you probably wouldn't with cottage or ricotta cheese

I was just at Costco, and here's what they had in Gilroy:

Valbresa French sheep's Feta, 21 oz, $6.99
President crumbled, 24 oz, $6.39

I checked the container in my refrigerator, President brand, already crumbled, 12 oz. $3.99 at Meijer.

I finally got to the Middle Eastern market today and feta prices were the same as on my last visit. The cheeses are sold in big blocks in liquid and they cut off the size the customer requests. Greek feta was $4.99/lb., Bulgarian feta (my preference) $5.99/lb. and French feta $6.99/lb.

I also experienced feta sticker shock last week. I use it frequently but will be rethinking that for awhile.

I buy feta at a Lebanese market (It's closer to me than the nearest Greek market), and I buy Bulgarian sheep's milk, but I haven't bought any in the past couple of months. DB bought some Greek feta to use on the leftovers he had from our favorite Greek restaurant, but I don't know how much he paid for it. The Bulgarian feta comes in a tub with liquid. The Lebanese market is very close to where Kevin works, and so sometimes he goes there on his lunch hour.
