how much yarn?

Carol_AnnSeptember 5, 2007

I want to make a scarf for the red scarf project (here) and bought yarn today... then I got home and looked at patterns and wondered if I have enough yarn for a scarf. I'm just going to do a simple ridged rib pattern. How do you determine how much yarn you need?? Is there some kind of rule of thumb for things like this? How do you figure it if you aren't sure of a pattern? I bought Paton's Shetland Chunky Tweed, 3 oz., 123 yards per skein, 2 skeins... is that enough? The scarf will be about 60" long and 6-8" wide. This has to be mailed by Oct. 15 so I need to get busy! :)

Thank you! I know I'm forever asking what must seem like basic questions but I'm sure glad y'all are here!

Below is a link to a useful calculator for yardage needed. How much you need will depend on your gauge.
