Needle Size

jjknitterAugust 7, 2010

A friend gave me Lt. Worsted Yarn and a pattern. My

problem is the pattern calls for Worsted Weight with

gauge of 16 stitches per 4 inches. Any suggestion on

what size needle to use?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Every wool company has their own guage. If the label is attached it should tell you the guage. You can also go into the site of the maker and find out what the guage this wool calls for. I wouldn't deviate too far from the manufacturer's suggestion for that wool(1 size up or down) or it won't knit up well. You might have to find another pattern for that wool.

That having been said most yarn guages for worsted weight are for 5 MM needles, 6 Canadian, 7 American. Do a swatch with 8 stitches to see if it comes to 2 inches before you start on the pattern

Thank you for your reply. I found another pattern using
Sport Weight and the Lt. Worsted Yarn seems to be the
same gauge.
Thanks again.
I guess Lt. Worsted Yarn is the same as Sport?

Not really. There is variation in size between manufacturers. Light worsted is thicker than sport. Try it and see how the gauge works.
