changing grey wool to black

kittymoonbeamMay 2, 2013

I was given some super soft merino/alpaca wool yarn and I don't like the medium grey color. I would love it if it was black or even a deep wine or purple. Is it worth it to try dying this yarn. It is for #6 needles (dk )and I have enough to make a medium sized long sleeved pullover. I have dyed yarn before but only in small amounts for socks. I loved the results but the color didn't stay well when it was washed. Please give me your thoughts on what to do with this yarn.

Any time you overdye, which is what you want to do here, the color will bleed. The deeper and darker the color, the more bleed you will get, even using quality dyes. On a pullover, the color may transfer to skin or other clothing. You might be better off trying to change the tone of the gray rather than trying for a deep color.
