Open Stairwell in the Kitchen!!!--How can I rework this?

amylynn3033May 22, 2011

I just bought a foreclosure house for a great deal, but I think the main reason for the deal is the stairwell in the kitchen which juts out right over a section of bottom cabinets creating "functional obsolescence." I considered putting in a spiral staircase and knocking out the existing stairs altogether, but I am concerned about resale with a sprial staircase. I also considered creating a wall on the side of the kitchen covering the stairs and maybe putting in a pantry or wall of cabinets under the stairs, but this will greatly decrease the size of the kitchen and give me no work space. I do have a covered porch right off the kitchen which I could enclose for extra space, but I am trying to find the most economical solution. Any suggestions?

If it's not too late and you haven't already done so, I suggest posting this on the "Discussions" side of Kitchens. This is the "Gallery" side that's more for finished kitchens and the like. The Discussions side of Kitchens is for on-topic discussions concerning kitchen remodels. You will most likely get many more responses over there.

Oh, and're probably not receiving emails of follow-up postings, even though you checked the box requesting them. This is b/c you don't have the email option turned on in your profile. See the "Read Me" thread for more information. Scroll down to the post with the subject "Getting Emails Sent To You...3-step Process".

Good luck!
