Is a 10'x15' Kitchen too small for U-Shape?

OCJeffFebruary 15, 2011

I've been lurking on here for a while, but this is my first post.

I have a 10' x 15' L shaped kitchen with a large 6'x4' island in the middle. Is this space too small to put a 4'x4' island, and convert it to a U-shaped kitchen?

My only problem is I have a stand alone 30" stove/oven and am not looking to make a significant investment in the appliances at this time.

Any input or comments would be appreciated.

The rule of thumb is to have a minimum of 42" walk space. I prefer 48" myself. Hope that helps!

We have a similar type layout and have designed a U shaped kitchen with a smaller island (2'x4').

I have heard the minimum clearance should be 36", which this layout accomplishes, but obviously more would make it not feel so cramped and provide more space for multiple people to be in the kitchen.

Hope this helps!
