A/C outside unit - cover in winter or not

qmarkerMarch 10, 2011

Hello, I just moved into a new condo and at a little welcome gathering someone brought up the question on whether or not it is a good idea to cover our A/C units in Wisconsin winters. Some said they do indeed cover them, some said they cover only the top and of course others said they do not cover them.

I just sold my home after 35 years of never covering the outside unit but now I am wondering if it is something I should have been doing and would I be wise to begin with this nice new one I have?

And, if it is a good idea what sort of cover would it be?

Thanks for any opinions

An outdoor unit needs to breathe. Covering the top opening wouldn't hurt.

A closed up unit makes a good home for critters.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to move the snow (carefully, please)away from the grilled sides, so it can breathe.
