Oil stain in hardwood floor

jefsboysNovember 4, 2012

I am refinishing some old 3/4 X 3-1/2 hardwood floor.

Some of the flooring has what appears to be oil that sat on the wood and penetrated deeply into the wood. I have stripped them and done some sanding on them, but, the oil soaked wood runs deep. That part of the wood seems softer.

I am not concerned about discoloration to much. this flooring is over 100 years old and I am leaving the "character" in the flooring.

I just want to make sure that my finish will adhere to this.

Was thinking about pouring some mineral spirits on the areas. Thoughts?

Alcohol maybe. Thoughts?

I have been using a tung oil from Waterlox for refinishing the floors in my house.

Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I would suggest applying some finish over the area of concern. Not just the oil soaked spot but a good size chunk about 1ftx1ft. And see if you have issues. If you were staining the wood a different color other than natural you would possibly have an issue.
