To Transition or Not?

glittergirl_txOctober 30, 2011

We are installing bamboo hardwood tile in the dining room which is to the left as you enter our house (ie: first room you see). Should we just do tile to tile or provide a stone type transition in the doorway? Thank you for any and all suggestions.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hmmmm which option?

I like it better w/o a transition piece. I think it would give your space a cleaner look. IMHO if you add a big transition piece it just sticks out to people and announces "hey, I'm changing my flooring here" That is just my opinion though. I always tend to go more clean and less decorative.

Do the installation instructions for the tile recommend an expansion gap at the area's edges? If so, you'll need to either provide a transition to cover the expansion gap or caulk the seam.

I prefer a clean flush look when transitioning flooring products. To me a transition strip looks like a cover-up of a mistake or an installer that was to lazy to do it right. Be aware of height considerations of each finish surface, and prepare as needed to acheive a flush transition.

Thank you everyone! We are going without a transition. Floor is being put down tomorrow so I'll post a pic when it is done.
