Passive heat exchanger for furnace and water heater vent pipes

Has anyone seen a fin type of arrangement for passive heat exchange on heating exhaust pipes? Both of my heaters are in an unheated basement and any heat gained would be a big plus.

They can work, but you need to make sure the flue gas remains hot enough to draw correctly.
