Refinish? Replace? Hardwood Help Needed!

MamaSkerOctober 24, 2012

Our house is almost 10 years old with pre-finished brazilian cherry floors throughout most of the lower level and on the stairs. The formal living room & dining room have carpet which is in desperate need of replacement. We are considering extending the hardwoods into those rooms. The finish on the existing floors is scratched & worn in many places. (We're the 3rd owners of this home.) Can we refinish the existing while adding hardwood in the adjoining rooms? Would we need to replace it all? It seems crazy to install pre-finished floor and then refinish the entire thing...but maybe that makes more sense? I'm not a fan of the grooves in the existing floor and losing those through refinishing would be a bonus. :-)

You can refinish the exsisting hardwood. Its going to require sanding quite a bit of wood to remove the grooves. (Assuming you have 3/4"). If you add more wood dont install prefinish(unless you dont want to sand it)
