Stef that Kitchen looks like it's full of hidden gems in those cupboards. Is this place close to you? You've got to go. The cabinet style is so nostalgic. I've never seen that in Canada.

Yes, the estate sale is here in town. They haven't published the address because they are doing a pre-sale by appointment. It's an amazing mix of French and German porcelain, Mexican souvenirs from the 20's and nearly new resin teddy bear collectibles. Even a Niagara Falls Canada mug. Did you see that turquoise dish drainer?
To get an appointment I'll have to target some items I'm interested in. That would be most of it (except the resin bears).
That German porcelain would be knockout I'm sure. Cameras, cars, any old German stuff is always a masterpiece of work and engineering.
And that dish drainer! Love it. C'mon Stef, I hope no one beats you to it. I wonder what it's made of?
Plllog- have you been cleaning and preparing in the Kitchen? You said 2 weeks right, until the big dinner? Or is the Kitchen not that ready yet for serious food prep.
The kitchen must be ready for serious cooking because plllog is out shopping for chicken and vegs for stock.

Hey, guess what? I put my big enamelled cast iron grill/griddle, that theoretically shouldn't work on induction, across the paired elements and turned them on. I only turned them on to number 3 because I was scared of having a problem. The glass stayed cool because there's really no contact except at the edges, which are outside of the circles, but the pan got warm! I'm so tickled! My little barely has a lip single element sized Le Creuset grill/griddle doesn't work on the portable. (Haven't found it yet.)
Discovering your new kitchen works even better than expected is priceless!
I'm seriously looking into this combination idea before we get new counters. My KA gas cooktop takes forever to boil water and can't simmer either.
That's cute Plllog and good news. So now you're a little Induction Scientist. America needs more of those, in my opinion.

Stef, it is great. I do remember how long it took to boil water. And really with gas, you're heating the room more than the pot. The stat is 40%, so 60% goes into the room. The health thing too. A friend of mine that's a Doctor in Europe just came back from Norway and now there is finally more intense scrutiny as to what the real health risks of gas cooking are.
Since Plllog's tile tour went up, I've been debating a last minute switch to a 24 inch like her's to gain 6 inches of prep area . I know it's adequate. But my AEG transparent/white induction only comes in 30 inch. Would you agree that the Black induction really is not as nice above that White Wall Oven and on Yellow counter tiles?
I was impressed by the new "Grey" is the German translation of this one. But it's not as discreet as the "transparentish" 30 inch glass one.

In fact Plllog, have you thought about being a Chicken Tamer? A Chicken Petting Farm? Or neighborhood egg donator?
Oh, I can make a vegetable stock! What I said was I couldn't make stock from a tofurkey!! But I'm going to make a chicken stock, and render the chicken fat and use it to make matzah balls.
But I'm not going to wring the necks myself. There's better ways to kill chickens so I'll let the butchers do it.
Re the induction, is that new one 2 areas of zoneless plus one large double ring of normal? Were you intending to put a lot of clutter on the counters? If not, I don't see that the six tiled inches would make that big a difference to you. You can put your veg, bowl, or whatever on the cooktop if it's off. They won't hurt it. I think the 30" with the 30" oven will look the best and be the most useful. If you think the 24" mixed up one will suit you better it'll be okay.
Matzah Balls. Sounds delicious. BTW, when I was little, couple of years ago ;), my Dad and I used to buy all our meats from a Kosher meat shop in TO. I remember he always picked up Knishes? for me, round with ground beef inside I think. Ooops, shouldn't be talking meat should I?

Actually, after all this reno commotion I better NOT have any clutter on the counters. I'll have NO excuse with all these cupboards and drawers. My last Kitchen was... well you saw it. Clutter was the actual design. LOL!
But OK, good comment on the look and combining with the oven so leaning back to the German translation "Transparent with White Decor" 30 incher.
Hope you're all still proud of me for digging that other one out of my German hat. Somehow that mesh like finish tones the Black glass down a bit. I'm surprised no one else has picked up on the same AEG glass. They also might have a Patent.
There are others that have their own versions of texture on the glass. Then there's Miele who pride themselves on how purely blackly black theirs is. Yes, I'm proud of you for doing all your due diligence. But do also choose what you think will function best for you, not just what's prettiest. For instance, do you get more power in the circle with the combo unit, than in one "free zone"? For your wok?
What you get with kosher meat is humane treatment (as prescribe by ritual rather than necessarily current ideas, but the animal cannot suffer in death and still be kosher), and a lot of salt. I come from a mixed background (all Jewish, but mixed sub-cultures) and don't have knishes in my experience. I thought they were a kind of potato roll, but they're probably just the roll, and can be filled with whatever. Mel Brooks called them the "Jewish neutron bomb--kill all the people and leave the buildings standing."
Matzah balls aren't particularly delicious either. My mother learned to make them after many bad years because my father's elders expected them. They're just dumplings. What makes them delicious is what they're cooked in. Cooked in chicken soup they're kind of bland. I still like 'em, though, especially cold (not a great texture cold--a little slimy--but taste good right out of the fridge). My friend makes a dish that uses short ribs and marrow bones, lots of vegetables and sugar--it's really a vegetable dish and the sugar makes like a glaze, and breaks down the off cuts of meat. She makes her matzah balls in the juice of that, and I bet they have a lot of flavor!

Funny you said that about the induction ie. the power/zone. I was surprised that the Free Zone units were actually more powerful than their zoned siblings. On the 2 IKEA units I was after, the free zone had 4 x 3.2 KW. All equal. But the zoned unit, had 1.8, 2.4, 2.4, 3.2 something like that. So, seems like these free zoners are more powerful.
It gets better... The transparent one is 4x 3.2 KW and.... my dream (next life) AEG concave WOK Induction is tadummmm 3.2 KW!
Looks like 3.2 KW is the max power in current induction technology.
So Plllog, can I can run 4 Woks at the same time! One meal for you, one for Stef, one for me, and one for Missy (poor her) I really hope she's not badly sick as it's been long since we heard.
Yes you're right about the Knishes. They are Potato rolls but I remember they were sickly greasy and I always used to pat them with a paper towel to absorb the grease before eating. I hope I didn't eat too many of them :(

She's had me running around, grabbing stray Chickens all over LA, and coaxing me to wring their necks for her Chicken Stock.
Not to mention the canals I helped dig in front of her rose bushes.
Now she's got me on my hands and knees washing all this reno dust laden kitchen stuff because the Dishwasher is finicky or something.
And after all this, she's still not giving me her Kitchen! Can you believe it?
LOL at the chickens, that's become quite popular here. At least roosters aren't allowed in the city limits.
Hi Marthavila, good to see you back again. Doing great, but it's literally freezing here tonight and tomorrow night. Thanks for the compliment on the Discussion stuff, I just say what I know or think and try to stay away from negative personal comments.
We talked with a realtor and gave some friends a tour and both were quite positive. We'll probably list it soon, but will miss the deadline on the first time homebuyer credit.
The estate presale is usually for dealers or serious collectors, so I'll try to wait until they open it up to the rest of us.
DH has been reading about induction and is really getting on board with the idea. Must be that German engineering.
We'll postpone the countertop until a decision is made.

Sol, that's pretty funny about the chickens. That "barn" looks like a charity auction $10K playhouse, not a chicken coop!
Re the free-zone power, make sure that it translates into the same amount of heat. Because the freezone has all those little inductors it might be a lot less efficient a system. I don't know. Go research.
Steff, good news on the state of the Houston house. Did you show your H my stock thing?
The "stockarama" was very helpful in letting him see the induction in action. Seriously, the paper towel thing really got his attention. We get more than 60 days of triple digit temps in the summer so any way to keep heat out of the house is a plus.
A few years back we went to HD Expo to see the induction and it was not impressive because the only model on display had a clunky stainless rim and was at least 1/2" thick. Really, we probably wouldn't have revisited the idea if you hadn't posted your process.
We may invest in a portable unit as a test and go from there. I'm okay with postponing the counter tops as I've not really found the right solution.
Oh, Steff! I'm so glad to help. Induction was still a "secret" when I found out about it on GW. I ordered a portable first just to see how it worked. I knew it wasn't nearly as powerful as the real thing, and kept it in mind, but I'd still rather use it than my old, probably Dacor, gas, which was way under powered.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with buying the portable. It's not like you're taking a risk. Induction is taking over Europe. It's just GREAT in every sense. I really love the clean visuals. Smooth, indiscreet, and no more unsightly, filthy cast iron grates. These comments all coming from a former die hard Gas man who has only ever cooked on Gas. And to it I say:
"Hasta La Vista.... BABY!"
That restaurant looks great. Good for you with emphasis on tasting good too.
Just jumping in could be the way to go. If we do that then I would have to commit to a counter top. Progress in that area, too. Soapstone is back in the mix, thanks again to plllog.
It was so delicious Stef. I had "The Beach Bowl" wonder why ;). I forgot to add, I had a shot before the meal. Not Rum or Tequila, but Wheatgrass!
So, yes all my meals will now be at Fresh for Life.
Funny thing I couldn't decide what to order because every option sounded amazing so I went by the name. Beach, ya I've been known to like that.
Of course I wasn't on the stone market with the tile countertop but when I accidentally went into a shop that sold Soapstone, I couldn't believe the difference compared to Granite. It was so smooth and elegant and non porous. A no brainer if I ever choose one day.
Stef, do you think you would get a 24 inch induction or the more conventional 30 inch? Actually, likely no 24's to be found for sale in North America.
The 24" vs 30" and the idea of having both gas and electric available is a question to resolve. Ordering from Europe is probably not an option, but I'll look into it.
I think I mentioned before that the first trip to look at soapstone was a big miss. Soapstone is something you either get or not. Now there's a place here with new options so we'll take another look.

I'm comfortable with the existing laminate until we either find what we're looking for or know for sure it's not available. Going to look at Saratoga soapstone tomorrow. The article mentions a new soapstone treatment. I'll probably post on discussions to see if this is possible.

Solman, it was a very very long bill. No one knows what it means, other than a first step toward some kind of national public interest health care. It's nothing like Canada's. Something a little like Germany's maybe. Mostly a first step along a contentious path. There are some features they've headlined, like that people will be required soon to have insurance so that poor folks don't crowd emergency rooms for basic health services. I think there's provision for how to make sure the poor are covered. This is a HUGE good thing because under the system to date, hospitals can't turn away the indigent without caring for them, so people go there for somethings a physician's assistant or nurse practitioner could treat, let alone an emergency services specialist M.D. Providing them access to family physicians and health care centers will relieve hospitals of a tremendous drain that has forced a lot of them to close their emergency departments. There are provisions like that insurance can't be refused to children because of pre-existing conditions, and no lifetime caps on coverage, and other regulations on cherry picking. As to the rest, who knows? There will be a lot of changes. I hope it'll become political suicide to shred it. We need something. We probably don't need this as stands, but getting a system into place that can be improved is better than going with nothing.
Re Gaggenau, it's only the 24" induction that wasn't available here. The 36" identical unit with a duplicate of the right side on the left as well is available. Gagg just doesn't think enough Americans want smaller to pay for the UL listing. My mother has a Gaggenau oven. Before I knew anything else I wanted for the kitchen, I knew I wanted that oven. And I had been thinking about steam units of a much inferior sort before I saw the matching combi-steam oven. The reason for choosing to import the Gagg 24" rather than Miele or something, is the knob. I read about that in a manual for the 36" that also included the 24" and said, "That's for me!"

Say did you know Neff also has the knob? And it's removable! Held in place magnetically. It was interesting but I'm not sure what advantage it has over touch slider controls. I'd love to hear a German Neff sales pitch as to why it's good. I just wish I understood German to get the drift off their site.
Neff intrigued me because they were very high in the German Warentest Induction Cooktop Ratings.
Germany has the world's oldest universal health care system.
By the way, do you really see a difference between the German and Canadian Health Care System? I don't. Theirs is the same universal health care system. except dental, Orthopedic, and a couple of other things seem to be included. The hospitals in Germany are impeccable. I'm ashamed to admit they blow ours away. This observation comes from my several accompanied visits to both Doctor's offices and Hospitals.

The only thing I can gather. Children.
Little hands "could" activate touch controls but with the "Neff Nobb" you just lift it off and hide it away in the wall cupboard where the kids can't reach. OK. So what happens if Mommy forgot to hide the Nobb last night after cooking? Little Junior starts turning, pressing, and suddenly presto! he cracks the Induction combo.
Further, even a Nobbless induction is no threat unless the kid turns it on and there's a pot on the zone.
Also, what happens when the knob accidentally falls/rolls out of the wall cabinet where you hide it from Junior and the unthinkable, it falls right onto the ceramic cooktop. Ouch, I mean C R A C K'''.
So Mr. Neff, your Nobb still hasn't won me over. Talk to me.

What if Junior finds the Nobb, is quite intrigued by the new high tech German "toy" and takes it to the park or something with his friends and well... loses it! Could happen.

Yep. Magnet. Removable. Knob. Gaggenau. Works just like the Gaggenau, but not quite as pretty. What I like is that you can go from 9 through 0 to 1 instead of tap tapping through all the numbers, and it's easier in general to turn the knob. And it's just plain cool. Other things that sold me is the Gagg had all the features I wanted, and we have a good local repair service who said it would work okay, and whom I can call upon if it needs service.
You don't put cabinets over the cooktop--you put a VENT HOOD!!! REMEMBER????

No you're right Plllog. I think knobs in general are cool and preferred. Now they're retro! Suddenly so are buttons. Many a friend of mine do not like the iPhone touchscreen for texting and therefore would never buy one.
Since I grew up with knobs, I too prefer them on my Stereo for the volume control especially. I also don't like touch rocker switches for camera zooms. A manual twisting lens is more tactile therefore faster and more effective.
And maybe all the awards the Neff has won including "Favorite Cooktop" could have something to do with all of the above.
Oh no Plllog, nobody makes a Clear transparentish induction with a knob. So now what do we do? Can't any company in the world make the absolute perfect product :(

Say, did I hear Air Hockey? You like it too? I'm amazed. I thought only boys do Air. I LOVE air hockey!! In the age of loud, "shooting" arcade games, this classic is quickly becoming extinct. Sad.

Do I like Air Hockey? Yes, but haven't played in a while.
Do I like the Neff? Over other options? Plllog knows way more, I'm just getting into research.
Knobs? On cooking equipment they are a problem to clean. Also a problem on the front of slide in ranges because they can be reached by little hands. The magnet knob looks cool.
The new health care plan? If it solves the emergency room problem, that will be a plus. I remember the law that mandated people couldn't be turned away from emergency care was hailed as a good thing at the time, but the result was predictable. This plan may solve some problems, but will eventually lead to other problems such as lack of innovation and limited care.
Free? There are going to be lots of tax increases, mostly on things that were not taxed before. More fines and mandates are always more expensive. Increasing costs and increasing debt is a tax as well. Our current public health plans are insolvent and the care is nothing to get excited about.
From what we know, the plan has some winners in groups that get a break and losers in those who don't. We appear to be in the group of those who could lose a lot because our current plan works well for us and it will undoubtedly change.

Considering you have the Steam Combi Oven ((( DROOL ))), I'm shocked that the food got dried with all the steam. Or was the browning the problem?

Huh? Solman, there was no problem with the combi-steam. It was the Advantium that dried out toasted bread toast. No roast. My company dishes don't go in the DW anyway, so no biggie. It's all the other dishes I have to wash before then that are the big deal.
Oh. But that's good news. I thought this Gagg Combi was the culprit.
So, you're pulling out the fine English Bone for the big Doo? I guess one doesn't put those in dishwashers. Even a Miele? But why not? Remember I've never had one, yet.
Plllog, we can help with the dishes as long as I don't have to wear an apron. Men don't do aprons-well.
P.S. Just waiting for the Canadian Dollar to hit parity any second now to order my mini Miele from America. You see we Canadians are part of Obama's Recovery Plan :) Last time we hit par with the US, late 2008, Canadians flooded America with Auto purchases. And suddenly the smarter car companies lowered their prices in line with USA.
Nope! I'm pulling out the cheapass house brand Chinese porcelain. Unless there's clear glaze over the gold it can etch and discolour in dishwasher chemicals and heat. Thanks for the offer but I have help. You don't have to wash up. :)

Still researching the induction and found Wolf modules. Yikes, looks like the clunky style we saw several years ago. This is the reason to order from Europe.
Went to look at soapstone and fell in love with a granite instead. Not just any granite, but a crazy busy colorful rare granite with garnet gemstones and geode crystals. It looks like a rock shop. This is not happening....

Actually, Neff the Knobbers have beautiful inductions and modules should you decide to take that route. I'm really impressed with Neff as they are winning many German Design awards for their inductions and seem to be the favorite choice there. As German consumers are very practical by nature, that says a lot when they are buying large quantities of a product.
I believe the modular route is more expensive than a full size cooktop.
So any opinions after seeing all these Neff's etc. with the spin knobs, do you still think the AEG transparent looks any better, worse or same for the Yellow Mexican tiles. See Plllog, now you got be all Nobbed up.
The Neff style seems to be raised up above the counter a touch with additional metal frame. AEG styling is more frameless without metal, and just bevelled glass edges. And you can get raised metal frame.
Another pity is that we North Americans can't do touchy feely and see like the Germans can with all these inductions.

Yes the Quebecois shop like crazy in the US. I think we all do. But you will get Canadians with this why support the Yanks when you should support your own country, chip on their shoulders. But I say, who cares it's all about stretching your personal disposable income. Forget the politics. Leave that to the bureaucrats in Ottawa and Washington. Right?
For me, it's get a Bosch dishwasher bought in Canada or a Miele for the same price in America.

Steff, my gas is a Wolf module, and it's more delicate in appearance than the Gaggenau gas. More delicate in function, too, of course. :D The Miele modules are a bit dumb. Nice looking but not all that well designed for use.
Solly, dear, will you please post your links to the English version so we can understand them?
It seems most of the induction cooktops have at least some ss trim which looks like more work to clean than the smooth edge. Not a lot of change since I last looked at them three or so years ago and it may be that I wasn't as sold on the idea then as now. I'll need to go to a showroom for a better look.

He likes the Neff Knobb Induction that's 250 Euros LESS than the transparentish AEG and it has a cool Knobb! And it is pretty nice.
But, would it still look nice on Yellow tiles and above a White Wall Oven? Do you like it more or less than the AEG whitish one, aesthetically.
What do you guys think of the actual design of raised glass upon metal framing vs just bevelled glass?

When WOK cooking, one would have to put WOK on the bottom right zone since it has the highest power 3.3 KW. Now that is .1 Kw more than the Max on the Aeg, but not sure how much diff. that makes in cooking.
Would it bother you to WOK there instead of the bottom left zone? This question based on a right handed cook that holds the WOK handle with left hand and stirs with right.
P.S. Solly suddenly warms up to "The Knobb" due to coolness factor and the Wow appeal for Amy, knowing full well that no one anywhere in sight of this house has a Knobb induction. It's like a steering wheel on a cooktop!

Thanks for putting the auto translator on. I might have already mentioned I'm not a fan of the stainless trim especially if there's a lot of it. When I first went to look at induction I was anticipating something that appeared as forward looking as the technology and it wasn't there.
On where the wok sits, were you thinking you would have a something like a pot of rice cooking there under your left hand at the same time? The top is flush when not in use, they don't get hot and there are other spots you could use unless you have a lot dishes going at once.
The more transparentish one would look better on the yellow counter, but $250 Euros is a big difference although getting to be less of one these days. Black glass cooktops seem pretty neutral. We sent the black oven back only to have the cooktop question pop up.
Just found out that they are having problem reaching my 15 year old Super Yellow, and the first trial batch was awash.
Good news. What amazing people they really are. To take the care and time to make it right. They could have just thrown them in the box and shipped by Fed Ex on my wallet and they still make the same money.

Yes. Just talked to another person today who was touched by how nice Mexicans really are.
Gelson's. Ordered a 22 lb. free range turkey. Got a brisket for Monday, and a shankbone. And the most adorable little potatoes. They're the size of pearl onions. I got both yellow and purple. And baby golden beets, baby turnips, actual pearl onions, and mardi gras raddishes. Baby carrots, hearts of romaaine, parsley, heirloom cherry tomatoes, scallions, apple, orange, etc. But Trader Joe's nuts and dried fruit are so much better than anyone else's that I decided to make a separate trip. I also got a bottle of Baron Herzog Merlot, and white and purple grape juice for next week.
That was after I hit the Bloomie's sale, after I got my hair done, after I had my p.t. appt. after I caught up with my paperwork. No kitchen work at all today.

Yes, you want more power for the wok. I think the Gagg wok is 3500W. The Neff only has near that much on boost, which might not be long enough for the wok, so it would be important to find out if you can boost in series.
My only concern about the black, really, is having talked you out of the white fridge. Three different appliance colors in one smallish kitchen is a bit much. The "don't sell it" was under the assumption that the cooktop would be white. If it doesn't bother you, however, it doesn't matter. This isn't for the pictures, it's for living in. And a free standing fridge is easily replaced at any time in the future.
I really do think that function trumps aesthetics on the cooktop.

Now you are a mind reader too. Tile has been added to the list for a number of reasons. The cooktop decision can be made at any time because fill ins and repairs are possible. Tile can easily tie in all the colors and style I envision. It's traditional around here and there are amazing examples everywhere.
The rain on the party is why so many of us spend time on this forum. I really appreciate someone taking time to share a real reason to proceed cautiously. It's info I could not find anywhere else. Not all granite scratches that easily so it's not a given.
Looking at the stats, I think the AEG is better. The sliders look as functional as the knob. Not as cool, maybe, but better than tap tapping. Should be fine. And it, like most, does have parental lockout, so you don't need to worry when little ones come over. There's really very little power difference between the top powered Neff element and any one of the AEG's. AEG also boosts over 3KW. The only thing I don't know enough about is how the power concentrates with the "free zone". Do you get all that power in your pot? Or only with a big pot? That's the final question to ask, because the wok has such a small contact area.

The visiting depends on one's social circle. Yes, there tends to be a lot, but it all depends on how much one wants to do. I'm resting today instead of going to another Seder, but I'm going to a friend for a Pesach meal later in the week. Some people just abandon the whole thing and go away. Another friend is doing that--going on vacation with her kids to a hotel that does kosher for Passover for the whole week.

No, no, the mob is tomorrow. Monday was the few. Thanks for noticing the chairs! I love them. I expected plain aubergine ultrasuede, but these birds were just too perfect. The bowl is Polish. Passover is 7-8 days.
How's the kitchen coming?
Kitchen. Oh yeah.
Last week I fired the Carpenter. He had only bothered showing up 3 times since X-Mas with various excuses. Also, he ruined half of all the Kitchen trim!!!
First he was given approval of a color which I signed off on. Then he showed up with stained pieces of my trim with a color I had never seen! On top of that I questioned why it was all blotchy? Upon research I discovered:
1. The bare wood did not have a Varsol wiping to take off any remnants of the Stripper. If any stripper residue is still on the wood, then any applied stain will not adhere evenly. Logical.
2. The wood was not conditioned. This is from Staining 101 clearly outlined in any Minwax brochure and surely a "Pro" should know. The Minwax Home Depot sample boards clearly show a piece with conditioner (even) and a piece without (blotchy).
And YES half of all the trim was done like this and with a color I hadn't seen.
So basically I was now in a position of poorly stained trim which now needs to be stripped back to bare wood-AGAIN. And at my expense!! He never offered to strip it and correct.
Good lessons learned from my Kitchen Reno.
1. NEVER hire someone who works by the hour. They have no vested interest in your FINISHED project since they are getting daily pay.
2. NEVER hire tradespeople that already have a full time employer and are doing this on the "side", like Carpenter was. Again he only cares about his main job.
3. Never hire a tradesman without a written contract which:
1. Clearly outlines all of the jobs to be performed.
2. The time frame allowed to complete those jobs
3. A written guarantee that any unsatisfactory work will be repaired at THEIR cost.
4. Payment will only be made upon completion of the job.
Tiles- Did not hear back from Mexico. I assume difficulty.
On a MUCH more positive note. I've been engrossed this week in the biz. After working on winning a new customer since last June, it finally happened! I got it!! BIG. National Distribution. In fact the first order yesterday actually cleaned out ALL the inventory in the Whse. YIKES! So now the mad dash to produce more, in time. I guess that's a good problem to have :)
So this truly is a Good Friday!
P.S. Plllog, I'm dying to hear about your induction experience so far. Say, why don't you get a thread going on it! We need to take the kitchens of America to The New World.

I consider it one of the 10 most spectacular events witnessed in my lifetime. People from all over Latin and South American descend upon the streets for this majestic spectacle.

The timer even seems to work with the different frequency. Good enough to remind one to check the onions anyway.
You should know, I'm really really picky. Most of my choices are based on what didn't annoy me, or annoyed me the least.
Oh. The knob. In the demo, it just went round and round. The "improved" it by making one select the element for each adjustment. It also kind of resists going past 0 (9 directly to 1), which is part of what sold me on the unit. Another improvement. You have to tell it, yes, really, more or less. No biggie. Doesn't make it any worse than anything else. Just limits what was particularly special.

Shame about the knob kinetics. Usually German design is well executed. But considering that you're not an Appliance Engineer, and you can easily see a limitation and room for improvement, I understand your frustration. Not just the knob but the many other things we encounter daily. The reverse of that is that shortcomings lead to opportunity. And opportunities, if properly executed, can be rather lucrative. Think iPhone.
LOL!! No, Solman, the problems with the knob are only when they changed it to be more like other units. To un-annoy other people. I liked the old one. Nothing wrong with the new one. It just lacks a couple things I really liked about the old one.
Solman, that really is too bad about The Carpenter. There are some things he did well for you, but sometimes you just know you have to move on.
Wow, great new business there. Having to make more fast is a very good thing in this economic climate.

The Sesame Semolina bread turned out great. I used this recipe. It doesn't have any added sugar or fat. A bakery here used to have it daily, but they quit making it so I decided to give it a try. Have not made bread in many years because the artisan bakeries do such a good job. The semolina makes it taste like pasta and the house smells amazing. The perfect thing to go with Italian style Veal Stew.

Ah, Semana Santa. The annual Mexican shopping extravaganza and the week we switch to Spanish first to make our visitors feel welcome. The week you see more Mexican license plates than Texas ones in the parking lot. Yes, Semana Santa has been quite the week around here for many years.
You don't need to bake if there's a good bakery around. The Sesame Semolina bread is addictive and turns out to be easy to make at home.
James Baker is a Texan who turns 80 this year. It's interesting that you would remember him. The only Canadian government officials I could name off hand are Prime Ministers.

The quake came just when I was starting on my nap. It was a couple hundred miles away, though, so no biggie here. It was strange, being long in duration and rolling, which is explained by the fact that the epicenter was so far away. There was some talk by the geologists that it was connected to something something somewhere which is why it was felt so far off. I have a cool app on my iPhone called I Felt That!. It has almost instant readings from seismic monitors, so has information before the news does.
Let's all have a good thought for our neighbors in Mexico, that anyone who is trapped is found swiftly and cared for properly, and that rebuilding is swift and without predation.

Update on the Sesame Semolina bread. It was great for lunch dipped in really good olive oil with herbs from the garden. There was salad also but that bread was so good.

There are two books--the spiral bound Haggadah with commentary which sets out the order of the Seder (there are 15 steps), tells the story of what happend in the Exodus, and explains what it means. The song pamphlet is really songs. There are a few old Aramaic ones, some biblical Hebrew ones, as well as modern ones, a few English ones, and some very silly English ones to popular tunes. We sang the Ballad of the Four Sons and The Ten Plagues instead of reading those parts in the text, as well as one from a bible verse that says "sing a new song before God" (as in "in front" not "ahead in line") for the praises part.
So? Did you all have a good Easter?

We enjoyed our Easter Sunday with the previously mentioned Veal stew at the kitchen table, our favorite spot in the house. We have a dining room, but seldom use it because the view is so much better from the kitchen.
GULP;;;; Well you know. Enough about me. True story. Upon meeting one of my packagers today, I asked the same. The lady's reply. Well no, my husband lost his other leg. Absolutely shocked I asked again to clarify. Yes some gangrene set in after he banged his toe and his only remaining leg had to be amputated. I really felt for her; not to mention the poor DH who's still in some TO hospital.
Yes, things like this really come to spook you and you realize how lucky you really are and how precious life and your health really is. And it can all change in just a flash of a moment.

Prior to, I went for my first run of the season 7KM for about 25 min, nothing serious. I actually don't like running per se. I just do it for the token 20 minutes, just enough to get a cardio workout. At 25C and Key Biscayne Miami temps, I couldn't resist. And I wore shorts in April!!!!

Yes, thank-you, as of today we're all cleaned up. They came nice and early to pick up the tables and chairs. We finished the pots that were soaking from yesterday and the stemware this morning, and I made a nice casserole with stuffing, turkey and chopped vegetables left from the table. Turns out matzah cake meal works pretty well for making a roux for a velouté.
BTW, One doesn't need wrinkled recipe sheets. When mine get icky I print new ones. I have a nice acrylic cookbook holder, which I put a plastic spatter guard that didn't work well in to extend the height, and I put my papers in that. They have my menu, recipes for the night, including increases done when I'm thinking straight, and a pen for changes. Works great!!
Here's a new expression for you, Solman: Back-ordered. Or out of stock. Be honest with any clients who call during the three week gap. Say one of your clients cleaned you out but there are plenty coming and they can be delivered by X date. Maybe eat a shipping upgrade if they'll wait. ('Course if you're shipping morels that won't work, but I think it's some kind of tech thing, right?)

Both those cause uncertainty and lead to imbalance. They are gone and or don't yet exist. So why address them? It's all about LIFE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT. Then during my meditation, I began to see and think more clearly and the answer was right in front of my eyes. Silly me. Presently, the customer has stock--correction--- will have stock shortly. Lots of it!
All sales talk aside, the difference between the present quality that my customer is/was buying compared to what we will supply them is like comparing a Porsche 911 to a Pontiac Sunfire. Really. Even the countries of manufacture is applicable to my example. Top German quality compared to very low US quality. So with this fact in mind, it occurred to me that our product will last at least 4 times longer than their previous product. So, their usage and rate of order should theoretically be much much lower unless the users discard the product at the previously same rates, which is actually good for business :)
I'll know if my theory/above prediction is true after the first couple of orders.

Say remember how it feels to carry The Lonely Planet Europe in your Backpack. Wait is that a double oxymoron? A ten pound travel guide when you're traveling light? Thank you iPad, now I don't have to buy a Lonely Planet and stoop to tearing out pages from my new investment so that I don't mindlessly carry that hunk of bulk in my dainty, precious little pack. Last four words said with extreme skepticism. Actually I think I'm a much worse packer than I was in by budding backpacking days. Now my travel bag is more like an over bloated mule :)

I don't actually cook out of them often. I used them for guidelines or inspiration. It's the difference between getting a Botticelli coloring book and painting by the numbers, or tacking up a Botticelli postcard to inspire you to greatness.
Yes there will be alot of overlap indeed between the Pad and the iPhone.

That's terrible news about the coworker's husband. There have been a lot of advances in recent years to deal with amputees. Indeed life and health can change in an instant.
Steve's biggest contribution was his commitment to making a personal computer that was user friendly. He had the vision to see that everyone would find a use for it. I do get the Apple thing, my dad was a very early Apple devotee and could not understand that I had to go with a PC because the primary software in my profession is PC based.
So fun to see you enthused about your business. "It's on backorder" is perfectly acceptable and you can even turn it into a positive selling point since it's so much in demand.
A screen on the counter next to the prep area would not work for me. Even without a keyboard to destroy, it would get too messy in the heat of the battle. Maybe there's an optional recipe stand that will work. Like plllog, I rarely follow a recipe to the letter. Baking is the exception because the interaction of ingredients is based on science. I have a lot of cookbooks and many good recipes can be found on blogs. They've been taste tested with photos of the process along with notes like "use artichoke hearts along with the capers."
Steff, I'll tell you a secret--if you know how to bake you really can wing it! My friend taught me to make a cake without a recipe. You put all the stuff you'd put in a cake like flour, sugar, shortening and eggs, something for flavor like the soft strawberries that didn't get 'et, or some coffee and granola left from breakfast, and don't forget to put in some baking powder (doesn't really matter how much--a small spoonful). If it looks like cake batter (right consistency) and tastes like cake batter (you have to check the flavor so it's not a method for someone who never licked the beater), it's cake batter. Adjust flour and sugar if necessary, and don't forget the baking powder.
It's cake! If you only use one egg it'll be shorter and denser, more like a pound cake. If you use four eggs beated hard it'll be fluffier. Either way, it'll be cake.
I did this a lot when I was on a small stipend and living in the middle of nowhere.
Solman, The early announcements were that the iPad was supposed to run a very large percentage of iPhone apps, though obviously there will be some that are too specific to the capabilities of the particular device to work on the other. I thought that was one of the best parts! That there was some compatibility. I know my GC wants one just so he can do what he uses his iPhone for on a larger format to show clients. Pictures, drawings, sketches, etc., plus run the same contact management.

Yum, that sounds like a great cake recipe and definitely for someone who knows how to make a cake batter. I do change cakes and cookies some after I've made them from the recipe a few times. Since I hadn't made bread for quite a few years, I followed the recipe and even read several articles regarding rules for success in breadmaking. So much fun, more homemade bread is on the way.

I agree about turning the negative to the positive in biz. More intriguing Plllog was your idea of the shipping "upgrade". You being American, right away came up with a very American thing. That is Customer Service rules #1. NOBODY I repeat nobody does customer service like the Americans. That includes Canadians.
Whenever I was in Europe, I couldn't believe the total lack of this American concept. Especially in Germany!!! There it's-- I'll serve you when I'm ready to serve you-- Mr. Customer. Believe me I never stopped complaining about this in 7 years of Germany travels. OK, yes they are a "little" better. And now they even keep some shops open past 6 PM, until 8 PM! Notice I said some shops. Isn't that nice?
On one of my trips, I actually pondered making a booklet entitled "What Is Customer Service" translated to German and handing it out to all the rude businesses that I would encounter daily.
Customer Service. Nobody does it better than the Americans.

Speaking of American Customer Service. A few weeks back at Chipotle, the Manager saw me come in and when I reached the cash register to pay, he waived the Cashier off and said " No charge for his meal". Wow! Oh no it didn't stop there. He then asked me, what would you like to drink with that? My original order did not have any drinks.
Imagine my opinion now of Chipotle. As if it needed any further boost.

Interesting about your view of customer service. Definitely agree with the German observation. I asked about that once and the answer was basically "anyone can be nice, it's a real art to be German." Canadian service has always been pretty good in my view. I had a great working relationship with a Canadian firm on a project a few years back.

For example, we have this big chain here called Canadian Tire, basically a glorified Hardware store with an Auto repair Dep't and auto parts sales. Service was always sub par. Then when the announcement of Wal Mart ready to enter Canada came, the entire retail industry went into a shock frenzy of fear. Then the Americans arrived, Wal Mart, Best Buy, Home Depot, The Gap, etc. Suddenly all the Canadian retailers put on their Customer Service hats knowing that American managers were training all the new US Retailer employees on service the American Way. It was no wonder that the Canadians were scared.

The difference is actually one of the better aspects of Capitalism. If you have to compete for customers, and you're prevented from cheating, you have to find a different edge. Customer service is it. I don't know if you get it there, but CBS has this show called Undercover Boss. I saw it recently when it was the head of Roto Rooter (they snake pipes) going undercover as a new hire about whom they were shooting a training video. He tried the phone answering where they book clients, and the trainer was so frustrated! He was trying to argue the customer into not going elsewhere when there was a wait. The trainer said she wanted to be the customer's hero, to have them feel like it was going to be all right.
I used to be in retail and mail order. I know about shipping upgrades. :)

Oh, I got another one. I was in a Dep't store one day (Karstadt) in Celle Germany, near Hanover, and in an absolutely deserted Cookware dep't, on a Tuesday night. While standing in front of a 400 Euro set of Fissler pots, I asked the elderly saleswoman for help; and with an angry Mother's scowl, she raised her voice and her index finger with the single word MOMENT! That's where my idea of handing out pamphlets on "What Is Customer Service?" came from. Or maybe the pamphlet should have been on Manners. So, as a retaliation, my policy now in Germany is to only patronize Oriental restaurants where I feel like I'm treated like a God, by comparison.

At least I found out sonner rather than later. And the leader appears to be a slick Fraudster. Shame.
Oh, well, yes, Solly, we knew that, but you had to learn for yourself. Yoga itself isn't a bad thing. In fact, it has the following it does because it is very good, including for healing. They use it with cancer patients on nasty Western style regimens to improve their healing. What yoga, breathing, intention, meditation, etc., can, demonstrably, do for you, is improve circulation and posture (alignment of the body), improve blood flow, which in turn aids healing, encourage orderliness of thoughts and attitude, allowing the mind to heal and to engage in healing the body, and similar good things.
What is bad is faith healing. No one has ever been able to prove objectively that it works. People say that one must take theology on faith because one can't prove it, which is a circular argument. But any kind of real world operation, such as healing, will have a beginning point, an application and an outcome, so therefore, no matter the level of faith of the observer, should be demonstrable. There have also been objective studies of the efficacy of (Western) prayer on healing (though Western medicine) that have been published saying that they've shown that prayers by others improve the patient's health. Those studies have been shown to have flawed methodology to the extent that they're worthless as studies. All evidence is that the actual prayers of the community do not, in themselves, aid healing. What has been shown more definitively is that, as with yoga, the effect of faith and prayer on the individual helps that person to heal from within. Also, that when there are family, friends and community contributing actively to the healing of a person, that amount of human interaction and feeling of support helps the person to feel better and perhaps to heal, and prayer may be very important to the dedication and cohesiveness of the group, and to the individual's ability to participate actively in helping the sick person.
What you can be sure of is that any religion that you have to spend money to join is out for money. Period. I'm not talking about dues or offerings that are for the support of an institution. You can still be a full practicing member of mainstream (non-scam) religions, like Catholicism and Judaism, without paying a penny, even though it is customary to give to the support of the institution as well as charitable efforts. But you shouldn't have to buy your way in, and especially, shouldn't have to spend money to learn more and achieve higher status. That would be an abusive, emotional ponzi scheme.
An old-timey faith healing scam was where the radio or television preacher would tell people to put their old, broken watches on the radio or TV (this during vacuum tube days). If their faith was strong their timepieces would start working again. In reality, it's the heat from the set that made the watches go for a short time.
I'm very sorry you've been disappointed, but at least your eyes have been opened before you got in too far. Meantime, I was not teasing you! I was showing you what all your new beloved toy you're planning to get can do!

OK so I wondered how an informed, educated, alert mind could fall for such a rope a dope Ponzi scheme.
First, man hears about invigorating mind body results of a Yoga based practice.
Man has a "hole" in his overall mind body armor in the depths of a long, dark, grey, depressing, Winter and figures this is the answer-WEAKNESS.
Man pays the $390.00 "dues" and attends the "course" with absolute openness in order to attain maximum results. In the first 10 minutes the course begins with everyone asked to walk around the room and greet everybody with:
"My name is .... and I am your's." Everyone follows. Therefore the Cult's Goal #1 has been achieved-TOTAL and ABSOLUTE SURRENDER in the guise of family brotherhood.
Before the course begins, everyone is asked to sign a rather auspicious form with more than the usual contact information:
"I agree to keep all the teachings of this course strictly confidential and will not teach or share the Sidushin Kriya with anyone else. The Sidushin Kriya is a registered trademark of Art of Living."
Now that should have been clue #2. You are buying a product, even trademarked!, plain and simple. This is a money making profit motivated operation. Simple. A Biz guy like me again should have clued in and walked straight out.
So I complete Part 1 of "The Course" with a reminder to all that the 2nd part is the "Advanced Course" which brings you to a euphoric high and "magical mental clarity."
Then I go to the "tune up" long Kriya sessions. Free, thank God. During that one, 2 weeks ago, my "mental clarity" started to click, unfortunately for Art of Living LOL!!! When the Yoga exercise began, this time there was the Ponzi's, sorry "Gurugi", the self proclaimed Holy God's framed photo on a low wooden carved table right beside the teacher. -IDENTITY INSTILLING Of a SUPREME FIGURE We all follow the teacher and the teacher is a disciple of this great Ponzi crook.
Throughout the class and previous ones we are always sprinkled ever so subtly, the magic of this man Gurugi. So far we have been told that the Teacher, who had full blown Lupus since age of 15 and 2 divorced marriages, not only threw her medicine away but one magical day at the "Ashram" in Montreal, the GOD Guruji united her with the very special man who is now her husband. He also came to our class one day with a "Pep Rally" on the "Greatness of Gurugi" and "how he is a man of high society in India's elite, spiritually "saving and guiding" Mittel, the 5th richest man in the world. FAME INSTILLING
During this same class (my last one), midway, ever so subtly, the teacher asks all if we know about "365" the "Gurugi's save a child Initiative". You just give $1 a day and shazam! some hopelessly deprived slum child in India, Africa or whatever will benefit with one of the special schools and "village assistance projects" carried out by Art of Living "VOLUNTEERS". That part is actually true. This Ponzi crook not only rakes in Billions of Dollars-TAX FREE_ but he does it with ZERO Labor costs! The workers are all "dedicated to the universal cause of helping those in need". Brilliant. Even Bill Gates and Jobs could learn from a swindler like this. Thank god they don't. So it gets better. Just as we are about to get up, another very subtle reminder of " The Benefit Concert" in TO next weekend with all proceeds directed to "365" and yes blah blah blah. Here's the knee slapper. And I quote:
"So everyone, if you can attend it will be ever so nice and such a beautiful evening, tickets are only $15 AND even if you can't make it, you can still buy a ticket as a donation for those POOR impoverished children".!!!
Pressing the button of HUMAN SENSITIVITY and CHILD SUFFERING to profit. Again Sad. GENERATE PROFITS FROM MEMBERS WITHIN THE CULT
The layperson thinks, if "Sri Sri Ravi Shankar" is immersed in the society of India's famous Bollywood Stars, Business elite, Politicians, etc. then he's obviously special. The skeptical person thinks, in a grossly corrupt society like India, a Ponzi schemer like Sri Sri can get away with tax free income under the disguise of a " International Non profit Aid Organization" and never be scrutinized since the politicians who allow the "tax-free status" obviously profit from it too. Sad. Thinking even deeper, WHY are Sri Sri's photo opps always with the elite and never with a homeless Indian orphan without legs and flies crawling all over his face. No, that would dirty his Egyptian Cotton White Suits and Italian hand made shoes.
He boasts to have "sold" his course to 30,000,000 people x $390.00 = a Cool 12 Billion Dollars Cash-TAX FREE!!!! Not bad for a day's pay of crookedness. No wonder he wines and dines with the Mittel's and Ashrai Rai's of India!
So, the sad part of all is that a low life like this profits off people's insecurities, physical ailments, and social or financial life problems.
I feel bad not only for the 30,000,000 around the world that have helped this Ponzi build his Multi Billion Dollar empire but for all the precious hope that he has stolen from the hearts of so many. For me the $390.00 was disposable, but for many they may have given their precious earnings in the place of food, medicine, schooling etc. That is saddening to me.
Also, I feel bad to have shared this with you and Stef, my favorite Senoritas! The nice lady I met at Wegman's in Buffalo whose husband is dying of Cancer and based on my enthusiasm was willing to take the course with him. (still waiting to hear back from her)-I wrote her this morning asking for a luncheon meeting this weekend to explain.
I also mentioned this to another friend whose lady friend is going through Cancer therapy presently. She was immediately interested. Again, people on the verge of death are receptive to ANYTHING. I have already asked her not to consider this at all.
I did both of the above after asking my Teacher if there was any positive results with Art of Living and Cancer Patients. I was given the "story" of their Cancer Hospital in India and all kinds of studies, none which can be verified, as one of my Google LINKS clearly outlined.
But to anyone that I have shared my experience with, I have done so in absolute sincerity and good faith. I should have known that you can NEVER unquestionably follow anyone in this world. No politician, no leader of a Church, no employer, Law enforcement agencies, businesses, family member etc. Doing so only leads to possible distortion of reality.
Finally, other than contributing to the wealth of an unscrupulous organization and man, has there been any tangible benefit from doing the course?
1. I have discovered the art of deep Yoga breathing and meditation both of which undeniably help calm the mind.
2. Because of the course, I have become more diligent in the structure of my diet-and Vegetarianism which does make you feel lighter, fresher, slimmer, more alive.
3. I am more focused on fitness. I immediately went running when the insane temps went up at Easter.
4. The course did push me to make a lifestyle change, not that it was unhealthy by any means prior. Just stagnant.
In one of my Google Links, I found it very interesting when the astute writer made the connection of Yoga Teacher and Yoga Student. He said all accomplished Yogi's in the History of India always acknowledged their Master's under whom they studied. Yes Sri Sri RAVI SHANKAR is an accomplished Yogi, no doubt. But it is interesting that nowhere on his website or in public has he ever talked about his Master or Teacher. To do so would take attention away from "The Star" The Ponzi-who must always be front and centre of any show. I also like how the writer picked up on his Self-Naming and the name of a Holy One or God. "Sri Sri being His Holy One" in the Hindi language. Another sign of a Ponzi Ego Maniac that has already begun his sales pitch by name alone.
The above steps which I experienced first hand are likely similar situations of how all Cults indoctrinate their members and
generate financial profits. Obviously the head of the scheme, the Ponzi, controls the multiplying income.

Oh, dear! (Hugs) I did try to make a reasonable argument when you started in, but you were very resistant. You were all love and flowers and happy to FOUND it. You can't argue with a convert. But here we've been plugging along talking kitchens and ipads and other worldly things with you and you've had client meetings and massive shippings and all this real world hoopla. It's not like you were selling your worldly possessions and going to live in an ashram.
Definitions: $390 isn't "dues". It could be a fairly legitimate course fee, if you're actually learning stuff, and it did sound as if you did learn real stuff. Dues is what comes with a building and a fund for the roof and permanent clergy. Like the annual fee you pay the country club, the homeowner's association, the bowling league... There is something substantial that you receive in return.
Are you sure that the money from the benefit isn't going to the stated purpose? They can be a cult and still feed children.
Don't beat yourself up so much. You shared your enthusiasm. Now you're sharing your new knowledge. It's okay. Yoga breathing really can help ill people, so you haven't led them into total BS waste of time.

True story, my Yoga mat is outside on the dirt, in the Garden. You see, I was "washing" it naturally in the rain last Fall, forgot about it, snow fell, and then it was like frozen to the earth-all Winter. Promise.
Now how's that for a good excuse for not practicing Yoga, all Winter long ;)
