Hard of hearing

otisgirlDecember 31, 2006

Hi, My elderly aunt who is hard of hearing, refuses to get a hearing aid, due to vanity (she's 88) and she's worried she will lose it. I saw in Dr. Leonards Catalog 2 devices, one is a hearing aid that costs about $40 and the other a device (like a whisper 2000) that is a box like thing with a cord and ear phone, it costs about $20.......I wonder if anyone has had any experience with these items,if they are helpful or not........ if she could at least join in our family discussions she probably wouldn't mind having such a thing, in public might be a different story. Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you and Happy New Year!!!

I knew an older gentleman years ago that had the box-type you are talking about. It wasn't as good as a hearing aide, but did help. Some of the hearing aids are barely noticeable, so look around at different styles. Your aunt may be able to find one that she can tolerate.

I think what you are referring to are aids to help people who have a very slight hearing loss. Your best bet is to get a referral from her doctor. If she won't do it based on vanity, then you can't force her, she will do it when she is ready.

A good fitting hearing aid is key. We paid a whole lot for my husband's grandmother's hearing aids, but she could never hear anything and felt so left out during dinners and family gatherings. It got to the point where she wouldn't go out anywhere and was getting so depressed (she is 96) so the cost was well worth it to us to make her happier.
