How would you add more flooring to already installed hardwood?

LBrennanSeptember 23, 2011

We are having a house built and we get free hardwood in the kitchen, but they charge an insane price to install it on the rest of the floor. The house is open concept so every room flows into the other. We have found the exact same hardwood that the builder offers and would like to install it ourselves after closing. How would you continue laying hardwood when it ends at a seam?

I should mention it's real hardwood and is nailed down. It would seem simple.. just take out the cut pieces at the end and continue, but if they are nailed how would I go from short piece to long? I really hope someone understands what I'm saying. It's hard to verbalize it.

You have to remove some of the installed pieces to get the "fingers" to overlap.

Consider having them put in cheap vinyl and carpet and do ALL the hardwood yourselves. It might be easier.
