Choosing new PCP

deb_paAugust 13, 2011

Hubby and I had to find new doctors due to change in insurance. 3 of the four we checked into aren't affiliated with any hospitals. The one I chose is with a hospital, my husband's isn't. A friend of ours said it doesn't matter because if you are admitted to a hospital you normally have a specialist and insurance companies don't pay 2 doctors for the same thing under one admittance. Is this ok or what?

Ask your insurance company, they will be the only ones to be able to answer that.

when we had to select a pcp, I was very aware of what hospital the pcp was affiliated with. To me it was an indication of their skill set, and I knew which hospitals I don't want to be sent to in an emergency.

I had emergency surgery earlier this year, and while I know I could go anywhere for it, I went to the one my pcp is affiliated with, because I feel it is the best choice for me in my locality.

According the nation institute of health, one of the major roles of a pcp is "Assess the urgency of your medical problems and direct you to the best place for that care." So I would want that pcp to send me to the best local hospital, that is why it's an important part of the selection.

A careful reading of your insurers policies is warranted also. Good luck, here's hoping you never have to find out!
