flooring transition

Has anyone used two completely different hardwoods that connect with each other? We are remodeling the kitchen and I would love to do a site finished hardwood, but it would meet the ugly hardwood in the dining room and foyer. Would that look rediculous? Is there any sort of rule of thumb for this? The doorways where the floors would meet are average sized.

I have done this for clients in the past. The one thing I would recommend would be to make sure you do not have two busy grains working against each other. if one is a grainy oak I would contrast that with a light maple or some other less grainy wood.

On a similar note...I have Mannington laminate kitchen floor which transitions into living room. I want to pull out the carpet and expose the natural wood floor in the living room. Can I have the laminate and the natural wood transition without looking wonky? Any advice would be great!
