Satin or semi-gloss on hand scraped red oak floor?

hz2011July 27, 2011

We are installing unfinished red oak floor, will have it hand scraped on site. The stain color will be medium brown or rosewood. What finish, satin or semi-gloss looks better on dark handscraped floor? I learned that satin is easy to maintain, but does this apply to hand scraped floor as well? Thanks.

There's no difference in maintainability, unless you're talking about which one shows more dust/dirt (which would be the glossy). It's mostly a matter of design preference.

Thanks for the reply. We decided to go with satin finish. (Stain color will be rosewood). We will use Duraseal for both stain and finish. My question is, should we apply 3 coating of finish or 2 coatings? My contractor suggests 2 coatings. He said 3 coatings will be too thick, and easy to be scratched. Please help, we are starting on Monday. Thanks.
