Source for antique nail & pintle replacements?

FrogfruitDecember 13, 2012

I've been looking for replacement nails for years and it finally occurred to me to ask for help!

I have a loose hinge on an antique cabinet and it is missing two types of fasteners.

The picture shows the type of hinge, and the lag pintle and the nail that I need.

The square nail is 1" long and has a flat 3/8" round head. I've seen longer nails that are similar but not this length. Does this style of nail have a name?

The lag pintle for the hinge is 2" long, and its round barrel is 5/8" long and 1/4" diameter. It appears to have been made from a bent square nail. I found similar lag pintels but they are threaded and are larger.

I can't find replacements so I wonder if these are custom hand-made by a forge. If replacements can't be find, can anyone recommend a forge that could make replacements?

Many thanks for whatever info can be provided.

have you tried Horton Brasses, they have the nails, and can probably make the pintle for you. I used to have a link for blacksmiths that did inexpensive work, but can not find it.

Here is a link that might be useful: horton brasses

I haven't seen Horton before--thanks. I also see that they do make hinges with pintles.

And since I created my post, I learned that my pintle is a drive pintle not a lag pintle. Using accurate terms sure can make a search a lot more effective.
