How long before you could walk on hardwood?

If you just had your floors completely redone and finished with oil based poly, how long before you could walk on them?

Also, is it common for a contractor to only use one coat? Should I complain for them to come back and give it a second coat? This wasn't discussed when the work was agreed upon, but I told him I wanted it done right. Now that I'm looking into it, it seems as if two coats are necessary, and that he didn't do it right.

I am in the process of having my floors resanded and finished and all the bids I received specified 3 coats of poly. I think this is pretty standard.

One coat of sealer or a stain and buff, with 3 coats of oil, is common. Oil is suppose to be applied very thin, or is sets up very soft in thick coats.

Sounds like you got the lowball vague bid. Compared to a specific bid. Now you know, why some of the bids you received, where more than others.

Did they apply a sanding sealer of any kind?

Not sure about a sanding sealer. As far as I know, they sanded it to bare wood, stained it, then applied an oil based poly.

In a typical situation like mine, they would come back the next day for the second coat and day after for the third?
