What should I use to clean flagstone in our entry?

dwpcJune 26, 2013

We have a small area of flagstone floor (sandstone?) in our entry that needs thorough cleaning and sealing. It appears that it was never sealed; if it was its long gone. Its in good condition but dingy with a few small stains...paint drips and some oily looking spots. Can someone recommend a good stone cleaning product for interior use? Can I use TSP on stone? I'm afraid that using solvent on the stains would carry them deeper into the pores in the stone.

Hand and knees scrub it with an old fashioned ammonia solution and see if that doesn't get up the embedded dirt and remove any wax or other coating.

TSP is also good for general cleaning and shouldn't hurt it at all.
