How do I balance my garage door?

mrmichaeljmooreDecember 14, 2008

I just installed a new Chamberlain Belt Drive opener....

and I need to get my sectional garage door in balance.

It's not terribly out of balance, but the door does not stay up when I open i manually to about hip height. It falls down....slowly....

My door doesn't have a torsion spring....rather it has the extension springs...

Thanks for the help.

You can shorten the cables (same amount on both springs) to get more pull. I like the door to be in balance about half-way up or at chest height.
If the springs are 10 years or so old, you might want to get new springs (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) to replace the current ones. You'll need to know the weight of the door (using bathroom scales with the springs disconnected) in order to get the proper size replacements.
